The heartbeat’s too faint—
I tried to skip
down the boardwalk path,
the corner of my carnival eye glossed,
where pinks and reds
bled into blue,
and a thin blade of sadness
sliced through the ocean waves
I saw you drowning
in your carnival suit of cheap life.
Did you hear me call?
I shouted, “One more smile for life!”
But the pudding seas swallowed you whole
Now I walk the high-wire,
this tightrope called falling life,
teetering between the sky
and the abyss below
I felt the wind breathe
its quiet warning,
as the rope trembled beneath my feet,
each step a gamble
against the pull of gravity—
yet the crowd cheers for the fall
The sky grows dim;
night becomes my silent audience.
With each sway, I wonder—
is it courage that keeps me walking,
or the fear of what waits
below the safety net?

HIGH-WIRE ARTIST
A HUNDRED POEMS – LXVIII
if I LOVE what be more
that I express—stumble tumble
my tears a leg broken shoe
I should not beg the spot
where love that touched
the center of my yellow sun
so I love what never-touched
that red blot center of your heart
and if I love what be more?

LITTLE BIRD
Your tulips and balloons flying
all across a shining night
like lovers I want to fill
a memory just full of you
My new life of loving
Stars so brightly shinning
and you make a romance
inside of me like a knee-knocked
heart faintly say my name
when I nighty-night
And tell me I’m just a little bird
snuggled inside you, strong nest
Come morning we’re the first
to eat and chirp lips-bursting
I watch the sunrise my fireBird
wing-to-wing swinging dreams
the wood’s citizens know us
we’re what dreams are ever they be
Oh, falling, flying, sleeping, dreaming
I’m longing to linger until your done
dear, I could never stop dreaming
until sunbeams stop beaming
And I make a promise to you
I’ll dream, dream a little dream
of you!
