TIME IS NEVER OWNED

OH time is never owned cause time is always loaned
you can never give more to it and you can never leave
without leaving a piece of you
so the yesterdays we were others
today we believe we are we
and how life can help one
believe we’re better than yesterday — hold up yourself
to the Living Light: i once was youth and now ageless
so believe me.
And how the sun rises
and how the seas undulate
and hearts beat…
time is never owned.

SHE LEAVES BEHIND FOR THE END OF TIME

Thus men tumbled, whilst each struggled for peace;
And the lives of one overlaid and those of the other,
and fortunes of two falleth to the first:
which, when few lived, did vie with one another;
and now half died, so that now one lives.

Tho’ to each a body to live, yet they grapple
upon one common body; thus this strife
of gods, and men, and air, and water,
the product of long labouring labour,
bringing tenfold glory to Caesar’s era.

Then seeing which only worked greater grief
and loathsome toil, what I should in this short space fail to copy,
i reflected on those works that I thought most difficult,
And composed the poem above, to divide the toilsome march
with one finished task to be done; and yet to finish
with a sigh and a droop, a little less evil than it began,
but therefore nobler in sentiment than it began.

So therefore, last rites and unhappily now,
this song, until next next time, alas! thus sad.
Oh but these thrills and comforts that Nature gives,
which every hour she bestows, are, alas!

Till last year, little could reach those whom Nature
possessed by the book of science, but such
as she leaves behind for the end of time!

ROADSIDE BILLBOARD SLOGANS (1940s-1960s)

TIME FELL BEFORE MY ACHING FEET

TIME fell before my aching feet:
that i know little is more than
most who think they know all;
i watched time squirm before
me as a puddle of water —
i saw her dress make sounds,
silent before a breeze toward
trees.
i wept as a dew against
moist violets, as nature does;
and saw time die before me.
her greatest hand was sharp
dampness of a violet leaf
that cut my heart within approaching
exasperated winter hunger.
today i met space who cried;
having lost his best friend
called time his tongue was pale
searching for dead bodies and
broken teeth.

A HUNDRED POEMS – XXX

MY part a half of whole
a thought a slice of more
that my life lived and soared
my part your half our one
an emotion that wave of ocean
that my dreams becomes Life
and as one what more
than one and whole?

SEXY. IMMORTAL AGE, FINE SKIN, WOMAN

–sexy–. immortal age, fine skin, woman.

your vast fields held a single gate,
the heart you seek when in mortal fear,

deftly in soft romance. You come. To me,
so sweet and cute and take what is mine.
Through my golden gate of stability —
my apple on a table you bite and eat.

No sin. No gain. Only pain.
eating all these words while hiding
within a tree is this nature-woman.

BEYOND THE WHEN

we skip across the fence
beyond the WHEN
to Know what we are Doing
forgiving Light a Due
i cannot say this is truth
but suspect that light
whispers to the brain
after all is said & done.

QUEUE

A wrinkle of mine grew
beyond common wisdom
a divine proposition;
each road taken drawn
upon one’s face.
A younger one uncharted
the elders well-traveled;
unborn within the queue.

OCTOBER 15, 2018: 10:42 PM CST

IF for a moment then this moment
that if any where truer
hours would weep and time should die
IF for a moment then now is ready
that sweetest of knowing
When all is well and love alive.
