PURPLE CABBAGE

born a rebel he screamed
his first words to the doctor:
this is a mistake make it go away!
so he was born with a mind
and took it everywhere he traveled
packing it in a grocery bag next
to his red-tagged soul
and the purple cabbage
Go away! Go away! You’re insane!
leaving home he took his womb
a shrived skin of plastic and a spoon
to feed the lawn animals and milk tooth
the priests exercised their will in him
tried to break the spirit and the spell
but their hands were too fast — Mother
she cried and the statues bled
this is all a mistake
make it all go away
Go away! Go away! Just go away!

A HUNDRED POEMS – 047

we born of riches
all of us
aristocrat — even beggared
the mighty and the frail-small
a vault of bars in gold
earmarked for life’s events
swiftly/quaintly we spend
some to squander
into the wind —
the wise, thrifty
for the long road

A HUNDRED POEMS – 039

I lay bare
my soul
to eternity —
to see my clay
form —
from celestial
breath have I come
I now lay bare
a fall from grace —
In human form

A HUNDRED POEMS – 038

We are all born
into a dream
so deep that most
never awaken

ABCs

a pregnant 1
becomes b
and drinks
the nectar
of a yellow c
and pollinates
quickly lest
it becomes
a bit too
tar – d
life so
special
will you
agree with
m e?

VACANT SIGN

mother dear lover
who distilled
such fear between
my life and love
i share with you
a tea cup of leaf
and read the bottom
portent futures bleed
a separation of life
mother i loved you
but your womb
has no vacant sign

THE CALLING CARD (19th Century)

MY calling card you touched
a heavy stock and rough
that dream in stocking
those days a top hat
and knickers as much
the rules of etiquette
distribute upon my visits
that servant received
the card upon silver tray
and you would accept
my calling that day
if away that servant
would save my calling
and return I would —
another day
unless you sent to me
a card in envelope
and I would know then
a cold brush-off today
Such eloquence is lost
a great manner extinguished
but rare be the man today
that keeps tradition
a respect for women

SUNDRESS FAIRY

GOD who loves life
that choice made
a creation of one
that split by time
two souls – separation
by space-time
why should perfection
be denied by tick-tock
that one should live
and another waiting
that which dies
the other birthing
and time – pause
a crevasse shadow
but her words live
and my life dies
a perfection waits
and eternity smiles
one in one so love
perfection waits

TEETH

teeth that run
enamel roads
so hungry
looking for life
a piece of flesh
— to skin
but asphalt they bite
instead

my fear lonely traveler

by day we walk at night

— we sleep in haven

but teeth stay prowling

gashing and chomping

for a piece of my life

WHAT’S INSIDE

Image
(c) E.P. Robles

LITTLE child come inside
the cold will freeze you
and your soul will turn
to that ice that burns

but mama what’s inside
is worse than the cold
what’s inside will kill
my tender little soul

so i walk the sidewalks
and my tears melt ice
and my soul a little boy

loneliness is a pain
that follows sorrow
and i pray for tomorrows

let burn my swollen tears
inside a wintry life
and what i see i cry
and what sounds — kill me

oh i am just a boy
but my soul so ancient
and the wrinkles smile
they say oh lonely one

time alone is good
it heals the heart
and you are never alone
your angel walks with you
