THE lie so gel and tick
centuries upon centuries
a timeless tatoo upon soul
we were lost in that time
who we are so goddamn grand
but those Ones who watch
afraid of our very souls
at their touch could erase all
the contempt for that source
of war and faminine and death
i am no longer human but animal
cornered and challenged to a point
i shall risk all to gain what lost

I TASTED a feeling of wonderment
more than once within a span of life
greatness prevailed human depravity
to hear Beethoven –
Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125
I tasted a feeling of wonderment
more than once within a span of life
greatness prevailed human ignorance
to understand Einstein –
E-MC2 is not small fare of ingenuity
I tasted a feeling of profound shame
more than once within a span of life
to read of tyranny –
Hitler, Mussolini, Mao, and Pol Pot
Wonderment is a bitter-sweet taste
it holds no-bar the color of bearer
wept we should and must we be in awe
humanity so beautiful yet so horrific!

FOUGHT in the trenches of France
the screams belied the deeds
Instead of ‘for country!’
more said for love of mother
The trench reeked of gas
but the tents smelled of smoke
if you had’em you smoked’em
boots rotted and socks to hell
The voyage to paradise made
— Lady Liberty with her staff
as stiff as any military man
the diesel smoke choked many
Prohibition ran into my roads
From Chicago to musty Atlanta
bullets, broads, booze and brute
there I met my fate in rain-lead
Say nothing to the solider
speak low my ghost-friend
you were there too – I know
even though you don’t remember
